ERAS Application

To begin this process you must first be given a Token by your school (so inform your school ahead of time if you wish to participate in the Residency Match). You will use this Token number to create an account on ERAS.com

ERAS application includes a number of things such as submission of personal statement, letters of recommendation (LoRs), Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE), headshot picture, etc. so you can get started on these even before ERAS opens.

In addition, IMGs will also need to apply for ECFMG certification. Read more here.

On April 1st (no, it's not an April Fool's joke), ERAS released their Match 2022 calendar:

  • June 9, 2021: ERAS 2022 season begins.

  • June 24, 2021: ERAS 2022 Tokens released to IMGs.

  • September 1, 2021: Applicants may begin submitting their applications.

  • September 29, 2021: Residency programs may begin reviewing Match 2022 applications.

May 24, 2021 Update

ECFMG has published an overview of the Match 2022 cycle. Make sure to read each section carefully. I will break some of the information down in the coming weeks.

June 23, 2021 Update

ERAS has announced a new optional Supplemental ERAS Application. This will only apply for applicants of Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Dermatology and will be implemented this Match 2022 cycle.

It consists of a series of questions aimed for programs to get to know their applicants better. These include:

  • Geographic information;

  • Information about their most meaningful work, volunteer or research experiences; and

  • Preference signals.

Applicants will have a chance to fill in this Supplemental ERAS Application starting September 1st, 2021 and send the same application to a "small number" of participating programs.

More information will follow in August 2021 such as:

  • What are the geographic information questions?

  • Deadline to submit this Supplemental Application.

  • Which specific residency programs (within the three specialties mentioned) will be participating?

  • How many "signals" can an applicant send?

Starting mid-July, ERAS will make available a series of webinars aimed at helping applicants with the main and supplemental ERAS application for Match 2022.

How to purchase a Token?

  1. Log into ECFMG's OASIS page.

  2. Click on the bottom left "ERAS Support Services"

  3. Click on "ERAS Residency Token"

  4. Read the terms and conditions and proceed to pay the $155 fee.

  5. In a matter of hours (maximum one business day) you should be issued a Token number which you can access by following steps 1-3 (keep checking manually because you will not receive a notification by email when your Token is issued).

  6. You will then use this Token to create an AAMC-MyERAS account, where you will proceed to fill in your Match application.

How to use ERAS?

If you want some help understanding ERAS and how to fill your application, make sure to check out these webinars conducted by ERAS themselves:

You can keep an eye out for ERAS upcoming and recorded webinars here.

ECFMG Certification (only for IMGs)

This step is done only by IMG applicants and is either done simultaneously with your ERAS application or ideally before it (in a way that the certification comes out before you have to rank your programs).

Now that ECFMG has given more details regarding the 2022 pathway, you can read more on the ECFMG 2022 certification process.

Important Information

If, unfortunately, you did not Match in 2021 your ECFMG Certificate will remain valid should you wish to apply for Match 2022. As per the ECFMG's website:

Interview Season

One of the biggest unknowns regarding the Match 2022 is the interview format: Will it remain virtual? Will they return to in-person interviews? Will we see a hybrid interview season for the first time ever?

Stay tuned for updates regarding this.

Update - April 2021

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommended that OBGYN interviews be virtual while giving the option to explore in-person interviews if the programs wish to do so. Link here.

Update - May 2021

Both Ophthalmology & Pediatrics have recommended virtual interviews for this Match cycle.

Update - July 2021

More specialty societies have recommended virtual interviews:

Internal Medicine

Pathology

Urology

Remember that these are recommendations and each program is free to conduct things the way they wish. For example, they might only give in-person interviews, or give the applicant a choice of virtual interview and/or an in-person visit/interview. Remember to check each residency program's website for the most factual information.
